In a significant stride for the automotive sector, Omoda & Jaecoo, a brand under the Chery Group, has unveiled a revolutionary internal combustion engine boasting an exceptional 48% thermal efficiency. This groundbreaking announcement was made during the 2025 International User Summit, highlighting the company's commitment to advancing sustainable powertrain technologies. While fully electric vehicles remain a key long-term objective, Omoda & Jaecoo recognizes the immediate potential of hybrid systems in mitigating global energy consumption.
This remarkable 48% thermal efficiency represents a substantial leap forward from the current industry standard, which typically ranges between 38% and 45%. Each percentage point improvement in thermal efficiency translates to approximately a 2.5% reduction in fuel usage. Beyond the economic benefits, this enhanced efficiency directly contributes to a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions, addressing critical environmental concerns. The Chery Group's research and development division has achieved this milestone through a series of innovative advancements, including an ultra-high compression ratio of 26:1, specialized triple-link hyperbolic mechanisms, a 35% exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate, and cutting-edge thermal insulation coatings. These integrated technologies work in harmony to minimize heat loss and optimize the combustion cycle, paving the way for a new generation of highly efficient hybrid engines.
Furthermore, the summit showcased the real-world performance of Omoda & Jaecoo's existing SHS (Super Hybrid System). This system incorporates a 1.5 TDGI engine utilizing the Miller cycle, paired with two electric motors and an intelligent DHT transmission, achieving a commendable 44.5% thermal efficiency and fuel consumption as low as 6 liters per 100 kilometers. The SHS intelligently adapts driving modes to ensure optimal performance and efficiency across various speeds and load conditions. Its robust hybrid battery pack is engineered to withstand extreme temperatures, impacts, and water immersion, incorporating an advanced safety feature that severs power within a mere 2 milliseconds in the event of a collision. The system also offers an impressive all-electric range of 90 kilometers (56 miles) and features a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, capable of supplying up to 3.3 kilowatts of power to external devices.
The continuous pursuit of innovation in engine technology, as demonstrated by Omoda & Jaecoo, underscores a vital commitment to a more sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of traditional internal combustion engines and integrating them with advanced hybrid systems, the automotive industry can significantly reduce its environmental footprint and offer consumers more efficient, eco-friendly transportation solutions. This dedication to progress not only benefits the planet but also drives the evolution of mobility towards a brighter, cleaner tomorrow.
