This recall was prompted by three documented cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections in the affected regions, with one individual requiring hospitalization. Subsequent laboratory testing positively identified E. coli STEC in the Whatcom Blue cheese and E. coli O103 in the Farmhouse cheese, confirming the contamination source. Retailers had typically sold these cheeses in 2.5-pound wheels, which were often repackaged into smaller portions for individual consumers, necessitating a broad alert to ensure all potentially exposed products are removed from circulation.
