At the recent Vogue World: Hollywood event, the esteemed Angela Bassett captivated audiences by embodying her distinguished role as Queen Ramonda from the Black Panther films. She elegantly walked the runway at Paramount Pictures, presenting an authentic costume from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, specifically the regal attire worn by Ramonda during a United Nations assembly in Geneva.
The exquisite gown, a creation of designer Ruth E. Carter, features a striking purple hue, symbolizing royalty, and boasts a halter neckline adorned with a sculpted gold collar. Intricate Wakandan hieroglyphics are woven along the garment's central and side panels. A 3D-printed crown rests majestically atop an isicholo, a traditional headpiece customarily worn by married Zulu women, completing the ensemble.
Ruth E. Carter partnered with artist Julia Koerner to realize the sophisticated 3D elements of the costume. Furthermore, Douriean Fletcher was enlisted to meticulously design Ramonda's jewelry, including her distinctive earrings and the gemstone-embellished collar, adding layers of intricate detail to the royal ensemble.
Bassett's appearance was a highlight of the Afrofuturism segment of the show, which paid homage to how Carter and other visionaries have reinterpreted traditional African clothing for cinematic storytelling. Carter's innovative approach not only earned her an Academy Award for Black Panther, making her the first Black costume designer to achieve this honor, but she also secured a second Oscar for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Thus, Angela Bassett's portrayal was not merely a performance in a costume, but a powerful walk through a living piece of history.
